Check out this very cool walk through of all 9 holes from the Wii Golf mini-game from the Wii Sports game disc. It gives you hints on how you can beat the game!

1. Par 4…guarded by a front left bunker that’s rarely trouble. Easiest hole to birdie…with a good wind, you’re hitting a wedge into the green. I once eagled this hole from 100 yards with an iron.

2. Par 3…like many holes, guarded by a front middle bunker. Often times even landing the ball just over the bunker before the green, the ball bounces well past the hole.

3. Par 5 dogleg left. To get in eagle position, a slightly risky tee shot is required…hitting through the trees at the corner of the dogleg. Often times the ball will hit the trees and drop in the rough, or bounce through the fairway to the rough on the other side. A second shot from the rough makes for a layup, and a much longer third shot.

There is a secret landing spot in the woods to the left, though it’s very tough to stop the ball in the fairway here. Don’t and you’re out of bounds. Certainly not worth the risk, since birdies and eagles can be had cutting the dogleg.

4. Par 3 Usually a windy hole, also with a bunker in the front.

5. Par 5 Dogleg left. The bunker at the dogleg tempts players to cut the corner, which can be done most times. The second shot is uphill, over another front right bunker to a large level green. Often times it’s tough to stop a long second shot on the green.

6. Par 4 Dogleg left. Tee shot over water is easy, even with a fairway bunker to the left. Second shot is trickier, over water and a front right bunker…can be hard to stop the ball on the green, which is quite hilly.

7. Par 4 Dogleg left. A long drive is needed to avoid trees down the right side of the fairway. Only when a strong wind is blowing from tee to green can a direct shot be taken over the trees…often without success. With bunkers front and right, and most hole loacations on the upper back side, many attempts to hit it close bounce off the green. Tough birdie hole.

8. Par 3 Toughest hole. Uphill over cliffs to a level green, it’s hardly possible to stop the ball on the green…you’re either short or over. Pars are to be celebrated.

9. Par 5. Tee shot over water must stop on the fairway to be in position for another long second shot, also over water, to a small, elevated green. Then it’s almost impossible to stop the second shot on the green…most shots wind up in the rough. The hole is always at the top of a small hill, so all putts are straight and uphill.

Now you and I can do it too! He-heh it is not by playing more on the Wii but by actually playing it virtually. B. Alexis Castorri, a sports psychologist, writes:

But besides putting the time in on the range, are you aware that you can also create body memory, muscle memory by simply practising/visualizing your shots in your mind?? Your muscles don’t know you’re not actually on the range or course hitting live balls!!

Here’s what I mean, and here is how to do Virtual Golf: Dedicate 5-10 minutes each day for this mental exercise.

 1. Sit or lie down somewhere quiet with no interruptions.
2. Count backwards from 10 to 1.
3. Simply close your eyes and pretend/visualize a large TV screen deep inside you ( try to place the TV screen down in your belly).
4. ‘See’ yourself on range/course hitting balls.
5. Now go through a practice warm up, just like you would do on the range, go through all your clubs in the order you normally do, about 5-10 each…..irons, wedges, driver, putter, etc.
6. See/feel yourself making each swing ( I say ‘see’ or ‘feel’ because some golfers are highly visual, others are ‘feel’ oriented). Commit to each shot, and since you’re only in your mind, make each shot perfect.
7. Now if you choose, play a virtual hole from tee to green, including seeing yourself surveying each shot, calculating for wind, lie, slope, etc……Make this as real as possible. Take a bunker shot, a slippery downhill putt, etc.
8. When you feel as if you’ve warmed up every aspect of your game, count forwards from 1 to 10 and open your eyes.

Part 1: General in Game Mechanics

Part 1 of this guide basically sets the background frame work for the rest of this guide. It explains the different aspects of the video game’s mechanics and how that relates to your real golf swing. I will also try to keep the parts of the guide short so it is easily readable and you can be done in a few minutes.

How real is EA Tiger Woods PGA 07 when compared to real Golf?
I have to say, that the game developers have done a great job with the game’s swing mechanics. My estimate is that its about 85% there. This basically means if you golf swing is good, you get good shots, and if you suck in your swing, like me, your shots will be wide.

However the reality of this game is that no matter what, you will have to accept that it is still a virtual simulation. And like in all simulations there are a few things in a golf swing that cannot be reproduce.

The big one is the feel you get when you hit a sweet spot shot and the accompanying vibrations of the ball striking your club head. Thus this “feeling” will be lacking and a few golfers that I have let try the game cant seem to get use to it. It would have been nice for the Wii remote to vibrate (rumble) at the point of impact, then at least you would know which part of the swing you are at when you contact the ball.

Another problem is that the Wii Remote is not a golf club. It lacks the weight and balance of a real club. But if you remember you golf lessons starting out with a stick to get your swing right, then I think we can adapt with this as well.

Swing Plane
One of the things that the game and the Wii remote’s motion sensor senses very well is your swing plane. This is vital to a good swing. Having a good flat swing plane, means you will get good consistent straight shots. If you can keep this going well you generally do well in the game, this is the same principle on the golf green as well.

Swing Tempo
The rate and smoothness of your swing (or Swing Tempo) is one of the biggest reasons why you get poor shots in this game. The Wii Remote’s motion sensor is so efficient that your swing needs to be very smooth for it to do well (almost lazy like). Sounds like a real golf swing does it not? A fast and jerky back swing causes the remote to sense a change in direction too early resulting in a low powered hit. Furthermore, from my experience, it does not matter which direction or how you swing, the remote takes every stop in movement as the end of a swing step.

In fact you could swing the Wii remote, one handed like a bowling ball, or even horizontally like a base ball bat. You could even swing it forward then backward, or even perpendicular to the intended direction of travel of your virtual ball. It all cases the system will execute a perfect swing if the swing is smooth and the swing plane is flat.

However this does defeat the purpose of this game as a simulator if you are not swinging the Wii remote like you would a golf club.

———-

All right, enough from me for today, please do stay tuned to the next instalment, where we will continue the discussion of the realities of the swing mechanics of this game.

There is a general lack if information on how real golfing fundamentals and techniques can be applied in EA’s Tiger Woods PGA 07. Many times I find golfers frustrated with this game simply because they continue to apply their own special brand golf techniques and tricks that don’t really work in this game, or they do not understand that the game reads their swing differently. Therefore this how-to guide is targeted towards real golfers and helping them bridge that gap between virtual and real. Also I will be using some golfing terminology to help illustrate certain points, however, not to worry I will write this guide it in a language that even the arm chair golfer and non-golfer can understand it easily.

This How-to guide will be split into 6 parts and will focus mainly on swing techniques and fundamentals. I will leave the “green skills” ( i.e. which club to play or getting out of bunkers etc. ) out of this guide at this time.

Part 1: General in Game Mechanics
Part 2: General in Game Mechanics Continued
Part 3: Addressing the ball and holding the Wii Controller
Part 4: Driving
Part 5: Chipping
Part 6: Putting

This post will also be the master list and will link to all the guides that will be posted in the following days to come. Please enjoy and do let me know if you have any comments?

“Even though hybrids are more popular than ever (and easy to hit), you still have to be able to handle your fairway woods to have a complete long game. If you can hit your 3- and 5-woods with confidence from the fairway, par 5s become birdie opportunities and 420-yard par 4s are a lot less scary.

When you’re hitting a fairway wood, you’ve got a lot of real estate to cover to get to your target. Your first instinct is probably to give it a little more power, because you’re worried about coming up short. But if you try to hit it hard, you’ll tend to speed up your transition at the top and get out of sync. Lunging at the ball from the top leads to a lot of pulls and slices. You’ll get better results and often more distance if you swing at 80 percent effort.

I almost never hit a shot all out, and I make a conscious effort to swing my long clubs just as I do my wedges. Keep this in mind when hitting your fairway woods.”

If you need more information on his stroke do check out this video of Ernie and Michelle Wie. She is amazing.

Strangely in a game as simple and dumbed down as Wii Golf, I have found a few hardcore WiiGolfers that are have tried to better and master the game.

Our first article is written by Ramblings from the Marginalized and it focuses on the mechanics of the game, and looks to me targeted towards the non-golfer or the golfing novice. Here are some of his tips:

Swinging
Practice, practice, practice! Take your time on this step and make some practice swings until you are comfortable with the power meter reading on your swing. nothing ruins a game faster than swinging cold.

Putting
Putting is the trickiest part of the game. you do not want to use the normal swinging method but instead just use your wrist. A little bit of a wrist motion should sink most balls without sending your power meter into the red!

Tricks
For a harder game hold down the 2nd button when selecting the mode and the power meter, map and wind gauge will be disabled!

This next article is written by Eric Sink, focuses a little more (in fact a lot more) on the Green beating strategy and not too much on the technical aspects of the swing. To me that’s one of my favorite aspects of golfing on the green. Figuring out in your head on the best strategies how to beat that bunker! If you don’t believe him check out his score:
That is the best Wii Golf 9 Hole score I have seen so far! Great stuff Eric.
